"With its unique location and versatile space, we saw an opportunity to develop the Old Abbey Taphouse
as a cultural hub-in-a-pub focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM). Its
proximity to Manchester’s two main Universities makes the it an ideal venue for innovative applied
research and outreach projects. At the same time, it taps into the vibrant creativity and diversity of the
Hulme area. We believe that bridging those two worlds through innovative projects, community-led
events and a unique space can achieve real local benefit.

Our work so far has created a unique space of learning at the heart of Hulme, attracting people of all ages
and backgrounds, with events that span academic and community interest"

People, place and environment :
supporting community cohesion, social inclusion and/or environmental sustainability.

Pubs traditionally played a vital role in Social Cohesion. We work with the local schools on their sustainability projects, we help other Community Groups such as Hulme Community Garden whom we financed the electricity supply to the back area of their garden through running our Swing & Shout event.  We are home to the Gaiskil Garden Project who help support asylum seekers and refugees.  We regularly host events that attract hard to reach communities. We host events such as Board Games Night which we encourage people to come to on their own to meet new people. We are part of Hulme Community Forum and a proud partner of Place Cal.

Education and work:
supporting people from all backgrounds to develop their full educational and employment potential.

We have supported two people with Disabilities get back into Full Time Work through doing volunteer boo kkeeping with us. We hire people from the local community and use local SMEs for contract work. Weoffer free training pizza training sessions to groups such as Back on Track. We have helped a number of people set up their businesses at The Abbey by offering space for free, help with marketing, setting up websites and informal networking. Here is a review :

“Rachele at The Old Abbey Taphouse has been a fantastic help as I've embarked on the daunting journey
of setting up my own business.  I was worried about setting up a website and how complicated it would be but with Rachele's help I
created a basic home page very easily and I'm confident that I can now add to it at my leisure, so it's no longer overwhelming!
I love how The Old Abbey has become this great community hub where like-minded people are connecting
and helping each other on a number of levels; socially, entrepreneurially & supporting the local
community. “

Health and wellbeing: improving health and wellbeing in communities.

We support people with mental health issues and we provide events that help better mental health - for example we host Wellness: Emotional Health Protection for Musicians.  We have a Wellbeing Space upstairs offering treatments at affordable
prices. We offer free venue hire for groups to put on Wellbeing Events that are aimed at the community such as Cracking Good Food.   A recent success was the memorial for Dr Bernadette Tynan which brought together doctors, wellbeing practitioners, grief counselors, chefs and the community to educate and support people going through Ovarian Cancer.  We work to eliminate social exclusion through events which people can attend for free by themselves.  These include Board Games Nights, Punk Rock Choir and Jam Nights.

We offer affordable food and an 80% vegan menu. We use biodegradable plastic. We are home to the Urban Farm Lab that provides food education on Mushrooms. We offer free kitchen use to Food focused community groups such a 4 Lunch that helppeople with mental health issues get back into work.

Culture and science:
using the arts, science or culture to promote understanding and participation
in communities.

All the events we do work to this! We regularly put on cultural events to engage the community which
bring together local musicians artists and SMEs. We work closely with other community groups to help
develop active networks that support the local community and residents. We deliver STEAM events that
are fun and hands on and help people to start thinking creatively.
